These days, it seems like there’s no shortage of new, interesting dental procedures available. One that’s getting used more and more often is sedation dentistry. What’s surprising is that many people aren’t as knowledgeable about it as you’d expect.
Today, we’re going to walk you through what sedation dentistry entails. We can also give you different ideas on when you might want to ask dentist for this service.
What is it?
As its name implies, sedation dentistry is merely any dental procedure performed on a patient who’s been sedated. Dr. Brian Wah might recommend sedation dentistry for a wide variety of reasons, but only when it can help your child and their oral health needs.
How does it work?
There are a few levels, or steps, of sedation dentistry that we offer for your child’s comfort, can use. The first is by using laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, to gently help them relax. The second is a deeper level of relaxation that puts your child right on the edge of consciousness using oral sedation. The last knocks them out completely (general anesthesia).
When is sedation needed?
You can ask any of us here at Children's and Adolescent Dentistry of Franklin in Franklin, Tennessee, when we’d recommend sedation dentistry. If you’ve ever talked to us about your child’s anxiety over dental appointments before, or other issues, then we’ll likely recommend sedation.
